Croaziere : litoralul bulgaresc

Balcic e port of entry si trebuie facuta intrarea barcii in Bulgaria.

Varna-Nesebar, 42 nm.

Sacrificiul e de 6 nm in plus. O nimica toata.

Pana acum am scris si descris croaziere autohtone cu vele. Acum depasim putin autohtonul, ramanand in Mare Nostrum.

+ Barca pretabila unei asemenea actiuni

Distractie placuta ne vedem in septembrie

Sozopol is said to be the oldest town on the Bulgaria Black Sea coast dating back to the Bronze Age, with a very well preserved old town. A favourite place for artists, its bohemian atmosphere, cobbled streets and sandy beaches make it very crowded in the summer with tourists.

For visiting yachts, the new marina - now open but still not completed - makes this an attractive stopover.

On approach, be aware of long fishing nets on the west side of Sveti Ivan, they also extend to the south of it.

Position 42° 25.3’N, 27° 41.0’E.

Clearance
This is not a Port of Entry.

Docking
There is very good shelter in the new marina, on the starboard side as you enter the harbour. Yachts wishing to anchor will find a sheltered spot outside the harbour.

Balchik
Location
This port is the most northerly port in Bulgaria and the best port to clear in if coming from Romania.

When coming from the North (Romania) you will be called on VHF channel 16 by the Bulgarian border control authority when rounding Nos Kaliakra, requesting pertinent info. about boat and crew. They will also notify the border authorities in Balchik by telephone.

Approach from the East is straightforward with a breakwater clearly visible.

When coming from the South there is a permanent long fishing net set up a little to the West of the harbour entrance, with no lights.

The Town of Balchik becomes a busy seaside resort in the summer months. Its steep cobbled streets, Queen Mary's Palace and the botanical gardens all add to its interest as a port of call. There are many restaurants and bars and easy provisioning.

Position 43°24.0’N, 28° 09.8’E.

Clearance
Port of Entry. See Bulgaria Formalities for further details.

If this is you first port of entry in Bulgaria you will need to complete entry procedures. The officials will call on VHF Ch16 when entering the harbour and direct you to the commercial dock. This is a huge concrete wall approximately 8 feet high, not ideal for berthing, however the officials are reported to be friendly and patient and will assist with mooring lines.

Clearance is straight forward; one form is to be completed and a crew list. The officials will then take these documents and passports to their office and return with them duly stamped. The completed form becomes the cruising permit for all of Bulgaria, to be surrendered when clearing out.

After completing the clearance procedure proceed to the inner harbour (old fishing harbour).

Last updated July 2011.

Docking
The protection in Balchik harbour is very good.

The inner harbour gives good protection for all weather conditions and winds from all directions. This harbour has been converted to a marina with floating finger pontoons. Depths vary and it is as shallow as 2.5 meters in some places, however at the pontoons the depth is 3.5m.

The pontoons are suitable for yachts up to 12m. While longer yachts can use them in fair weather, in strong northerly winds it might be safer to try and find a berth alongside if available.

Facilities are limited, but water and electricity are available on the pontoons and there are shower and laundry facilities nearby. Berthing charges in July 2011 were 2 Euros a metre, including water and electricity.

Note that the docks are public and there is no security. In the summer months the inner harbour is a popular place to stroll for locals and tourists alike.

Burgas
Location
Lying at the westernmost point of the Black Sea, Burgas is Bulgaria's largest port. It hold several international festivals during the summer and has a vibrant student population which adds to its atmosphere. The town has a cosmopolitan feel, however facilities for visiting yachts are limited.

Position 42° 29.9’N, 27° 29.0’E.

Clearance
Port of Entry. See Bulgaria Formalities for details.

Call the Port Authories on VHF channel 11 on approach. Moor at Quay 6 for clearance. The formalities are performed here and are straightforward. The ships papers may be retained by the Harbourmaster.

The Port Control Office is situated on the 8th. floor of the tower with the radar antenna, by the dock gates. (NOTE: No lift after 3rd floor!). You must go here for departure clearance.

After clearance, a yacht can move to the yacht club.

Last updated June 2007.

Docking
The Yacht Club is immediately to starboard after passing the lighthouse at the entrance to the commercial harbour. Cruisers report that the moorings are in a poor state and generally for smaller yachts (no more than 12m). It may be advisable to drop your own anchor and back to the quay, but stand well off as wash from passing commercial traffic and swell can cause problems. There is 24 hour security.

It is quite a long walk into town from here with little shade.

There is an anchorage behind the commercial port. A few local boats moor here and it offers good shelter. The bottom is mud and good holding. You are closer to town and you do not have to walk through the port.

There is a dinghy ramp near the light on the end of the breakwater.

Nessebar
Location
The ancient town of Nessebar (an UNESCO World Heritage Site) is sometimes referred to as Bulgaria's Dubrovnik. It lies at the southern end of a big bay, with Sveti Vlas at its northern end.

Approach with care, shallows with scattered rocks extend some distance around the old town shoreline. Keep well to the South when approaching the breakwater from the North or East. A small marker buoy indicates the extent of the shallows to the South.

The old town is located on a peninsula connected to the mainland by a causeway. It consists of rebuilt churches, some dating back to the 5th century, cobblestone streets flanked by souvenir shops of every kind, and restaurants and bars.

It is a very popular tourist town and the crowds come to enjoy both the ancient buildings and remains, as well as one of the best beaches in Bulgaria. It is on the cruise ship itinerary and best seen on days when no cruise ships are in town.

Position 42° 39.2’N, 27° 43.7’E.

Clearance
Nessebar is not a yacht Port of Entry for Bulgaria.

Docking
There are many possibilities for mooring.

The breakwater on the North side of the harbour may have room, but it is also used by the day tripper boats and you might be asked to move. Security is limited here.

To the North is the new Marina Nessebar with a floating breakwater pontoon offering protection from Southerly winds and waves.

To the West is Yacht's Port Marina with good shelter.

Anchorage
It is possible to anchor in the harbour where there is good protection from all winds except Southerlies.

In Southerly winds anchor on the north side of the peninsula west of the fishing harbour. It is a sand/mud and weed bottom. Keep a careful eye out for isolated rocks when you are inside the 4m contour.

The town has banks, ATMs, internet cafes and easy provisioning.

It has been suggested by cruisers visiting in 2011 that Dinevi Marina in Sveti Vlas, 4 NM to the north of Nessebar, may be a better marina to leave your yacht if planning to travel inland.

Sveti Vlas
Location
The latest development in this growing resort town is the Dinevi marina, the largest in Bulgaria. The beach was expanded in 2007 and this town has the only beaches facing due South in Bulgaria. The marina resort with its clubs and restaurants atrracts the wealthy elite of Bulgaria.

Position 42° 42.3’N, 27° 46.0’E.

Clearance
The marina have informed noonsite that whilst last year (2010) it was possible for them to arrange clearance on request by the owner, from the beginning of 2011, under special instruction from the Border police office, it is now forbidden for clearance to be performed outside the official ports of entry for Bulgaria.

Docking
This is a well sheltered marina, located in the Northern part of Nessebar Bay, a short distance from town. As you approach the Marina call VHF Ch 73 for berthing instructions.

Tzarevo
Location
Tzarevo is just 15nm north of the border with Turkey. It is an attractive seaside resort with all the facilities that go with that. Take care entering the bay, there are reefs to the south and to the north. The reef to the south is marked, but it extends beyond the marker. The end of the breakwater is marked with a white tower.

Position 42°10.21N, 27° 51.56'E

Clearance
Port of Entry See Bulgaria Formalities for details.

Tzarevo is a convenient place to clear into Bulgaria when coming from Turkey, or to clear out when leaving Bulgaria.

Immigration officials are available around the clock, or “non-stop” as they say in Bulgaria. Customs officials work from 8 AM till 8 PM, making it difficult to clear out early enough to make the mouth of the Bosporus in daylight hours, an 82 nm trip. In some cases they will make special arrangements to clear out around 7 PM with the promise that everyone stays aboard until departure.

Last updated August 2011.

Docking
The harbour is largely open to the south, but shelter can be found in winds from other directions. The breakwater, behind which the customs dock is located, provides good protection from northerly and westerly winds.

On arrival, friendly port authority and customs/immigration officials are waiting to direct you to a berth with lazy lines, if not call on VHF channel 16. Water, electricity and Wi-Fi are available at very reasonable prices but mooring charges are extremely high for Bulgarian standards, around 3.30 Euro per metre at time of writing.

You have the option to clear in or out and then anchor in the bay, or take one of the free mooring buoys. The anchorage is exposed to any Easterly winds and subject to swell; it might be untenable in very strong easterly and southerly winds.

The town has a fuel station, bank, ATM, internet cafe etc.

Varna
Location
This is a very pleasant city on the western shores of the Black Sea, about 60nm north of Burgas, even though it is one of the largest ports on the Bulgarian coast. The pedestrian area of town runs for miles in all different directions and it would be very easy to spend weeks touring the sites of Varna, as there is so much to see.

Position 43° 11.4'N, 27° 53.3'E.

Clearance
Port of Entry. See Bulgaria Formalities for details.

Call Port Control on VHF on approach.

No one should either leave or visit the boat until clearance is completed. All the appropriate officials will visit the boat at the Yacht Club and the paperwork completed onboard. Reports are that this is very speedily done. There are no fees payable.

Call Port Control to advise of departure.

Last updated September 2010.

Docking
Berth at the Varna Yacht Club. Approach is straightforward. Leave the large outer breakwater to starboard and enter the yacht club. If the Club is full continue further into the harbour and secure to the ferry terminal.

Se pare ca cel mai sudic port unde se pot face formalitatile nu e nici Burgas nici Sozopol, ci Tsarevo "just 15nm north of the border with Turkey". ;)

foarte corect am fost la Tzarevo fostul Miciurin, foarte prietenosi, am facut formalitatile cam in 20 min, venit din Turcia, dar au controlat barca in toate ungherele, cheiajul a fost cred ca 65 Leva pt 12m , locul e frumos,

:) Asa e !
